Hello! I’m Julia Lewis, a piano and music theory teacher with 25 years’ experience of teaching children and adults. I live in London’s East End and currently have one or two vacancies for new pupils. Please telephone 07525 010 934 to find out more.
I visit my pupils, rather than have my pupils visit me, and at present I teach in Barnet, Southgate, Harrow, Bow, Hackney, Bethnal Green, City, Hoxton, Stoke Newington and Tower Hamlets.
I am happy to prepare students for Associated Board or other examinations though I don’t automatically focus on exams.
My CV in brief is as follows: I was trained as a pianist and separately as a teacher by G. Frederick Bailey, ARCM MRST, a pupil of the twentieth century piano guru Matthay who taught the legendary Clifford Curzon and Myra Hess! So I consider myself a ‘grandchild’ of Matthay in teaching lineage terms.
I took a BA/MA in music at the University of Oxford, and followed that with a diploma in pianoforte teaching from the Royal College of Music.
At the same time as I pursued classical music, from childhood I learned to play in a more popular style and have played in cabarets, shows, pubs and clubs. However it is the classical style I prefer and which I generally focus on teaching, though for pupils who are interested we can learn a little about chords and improvising.
I teach all ages and levels but perhaps with an emphasis on the lower age group. I have pupils as young as just four years old.
I have studied with G. Frederick Bailey, Frank Wibaut, Ian Brown, and Paul Roberts. I was piano teacher for St Martha’s Junior School before its recent sad disbandment, and am on the Junior Guildhall list of supply teachers.
